Shawn Mendes (5) - New Entrants

Yah! Told you all it was happening and I totally didn't just skip over it! Onto the post, we have six debuts this week, as well as the other two from last week I skipped over. That is 8 to review. So buckle up.

Let's start with last week. At #18, we had Mono Mind - Save Me A Place. I have to admit, fist listen, I was pretty split on this. Right on borderline of green and pink, but I chose pink. It has these weird Ellie Goulding-sounding vocals, but it has this nice electronic jazz vibe I can get into. Right now, it is green, but it can easily turn pink in the next few weeks.

Onto the lead single off of Taylor Swift's Reputation, we have Look What You Made Me Do. This felt random when I first heard it, similar to Save Me A Place. Then I got into it. It has this intimidating darker tone to it, then it has this high pitched build-up, then comes the chorus. This part is underwhelming, mainly because repetition, but yeah. The best part of the song is easily that phone conversation when Taylor Swift says the old Taylor is dead. This is a good song for now.

Now onto this week's debuts! Starting with Harry Styles - Two Ghosts. It was a while until I heard this. This is about being in a relationship, but things are not what they used to be. I like the rock/reggae style this song has. That chorus just can't get out of my head, though. Overall, it is good. One thing for sure, way better than Strip That Down.

Next, let's just jump over the others and go to Maroon 5/SZA - What Lovers Do. I liked this first listen. But then, I quickly lost interest in this. Can't really say this is better than Cold, but better than Don't Wanna Know, for sure. We don't need a falsetto from Adam Levine throughout the whole chorus. And then SZA does a pretty mediocre at best job. Overall, this is very unappealing at the moment.

Jumpin' backwards, we have Andy Grammer at #37 making a return with Give Love. His last song on this countdown, Fresh Eyes, I didn't like, in a Maroon 5/SZA - What Lovers Do kind of way. This song rises him back up, though. This song is a lot more upbeat than Fresh Eyes. "Hey honey, what you gonna do today?", I can't get out of my head. The chorus is really cool, too. Have to admit, in the post verses, his vocals are pretty annoying, but doesn't stop this from being good. Overall, I like this. Here's to hope this has success like Honey I'm Good.

Anyone tired of Justin yet? If that answer is yes, then bad news for you. He has a new single featuring BloodPop called Friends. "Can we still be, friends?" NO! GOD PLEASE NO! (Ok I'll stop). BloodPop pulls a DJ Khaled and partitions with this voice that says "BloodPop!" I mean, we can read. We're not that stupid. I'll stop ranting. Justin Bieber's vocals are on point. The lyrical content is getting better. Overall, this is a good song that I can get into.

Don't worry, friends. We are almost there. Seventh review, we have Portugal. The Man - Feel It Still. First listen, I was like: Oh god, is this really just a Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself cover? Then second listen, I found out it wasn't. The vocals and falsetto are okay, I guess, but the production is what makes this shine. I understand, it is the same drum kind of thing we have today, but it isn't that bad. Overall, this is pnk, but it can turn green easily at some point.

When a Halsey song leaves, another has to come and replace it. Replacing Now or Never, we have a single called Bad At Love. The production is actually more upbeat than Now or Never. The rest of the song including the lyrical content is also very good. Better than Now or Never, here is to hoping this does well here.

Blurbs will be out late on Sunday.
